Canadian pitcher Ryan Dempster has signed a four-year contract extension with the Chicago Cubs worth US$52-million.

The deal could keep Dempster with the Cubs through the 2012 Major League Baseball season.

He gets a $4-million signing bonus, $8-million next season, $12.5-million in 2010 and $13.5-million in 2011. Dempster also has an option for 2012 worth $14-million.

Dempster said he had casual and informal discussions with other MLB teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays, before deciding to return to the Cubs.
