Washington (dbTechno) - The Great American Smokeout is set to take place this Thursday across the United States.

The whole idea behind the Great American Smokeout is to try and reduce the number of people smoking in the U.S.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a goal set to have no more than 12% of the population smoking by 2010.

They are seemingly making progress according to a new report that they released.

They stated that in 2007, 19.8% of the adult population smoked, or 43.4 million people.

This is down about 1% from teh rate seen in 2006 which was up above 20%.

With the goal of 12% by 2010, the CDC seemingly still has a long way to go.

The Great American Smokeout will be celebrated for the 32nd time on Thursday and calls for smokers to not smoke at all for just one day.

The American Cancer Society hosts the annual event.
