FONT SIZE EMAIL PRINT RSS SHARE In an effort to scuttle a major part of President Obama's health care reform, private health insurers are taking the unusual step of asking Congress to increase regulation of their industry. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., proposes that any new government health insurance program abide by the rules that apply to private insurance, during a roundtable sponsored by the Senate Finance Committee in Washington, D.C., today. (Ferdous Al-Faruque/ABC News) "We are not asking people to trust us," Karen Ignagni, the president of America's Health Insurance Plans, told a key congressional panel on Tuesday. "We are asking people to trust government." The insurance industry's surprising request for more government rules and oversight is its latest attempt to convince Congress to reject a main component of Obama's health care reform plan -- a government run insurance program that would provide universal coverage and compete with private insurance plans.
