Los Angeles  - Michael Moore is planning to direct a follow-up to his hit 2004 film Fahrenheit 9/11, which took aim at US President George W Bush's administration and became the biggest grossing documentary of all time.

The new film's producers told the Hollywood Reporter in a report published Tuesday that it would be broader than its predecessor and focus on the US role in the world in foreign policy and business since Bush took office at the beginning of 2001.

"This is going to tackle what's going on in the world and America's place in it," Nick Meyer, head of Paramount Vantage, which is producing and financing the picture with Overture Films, told the movie publication.

Moore's latest offering was scheduled for a 2009 release, and his producers said he was just beginning production.

Fahrenheit 9/11 looked at Bush's disputed 2000 election and his administration's response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, including the war in Iraq. It became the first documentary since 1956 to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and took in 100 million dollars in the United States and more than 222 million dollars worldwide.

His other films to also win critical praise were 2002's Bowling for Columbine about Americans' relationship with guns and 1989's Roger and Me about General Motors Corp's downsizing and its effect on Moore's hometown of Flint, Michigan.
